Is the winner of the Hennessy Prize for Emerging Poetry and the runner up in the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in 2015. He also featured in Poetry Ireland’s Introductions Series the same year. He has been shortlisted for the Listowel Poetry Prize and Bridport Prize and received commendations in the Gregory O’Donoghue prize and Dromineer Literary Prize.

Keith Burke

Hailing from the Dublin Seaside town of Skerries, Keith Burke brings us his new album “These Boys”. It’s the third album of original songs from Burke. His frist being “The Dancer Who Stole Your Shoes” with the KB Band in ’04, his second and first solo production “No One Wants to Move” in ’08.

Signal Arts Centre is delighted to bring you an exhibition of drawings and paintings from French artist Veronique Castellanos.

“I am a French woman who has spent over 20 years in the West of Ireland, a mother of four, and a self-taught artist. I started painting in the early 2000s, however I cannot think back on a time in my life when I wasn’t holding a pencil and drawing!

My choice of subjects is as multi-faceted as I feel myself, and life, to be, and every new phase in my life has ushered in a different theme, or style. For example, as a painter, for many years I seemed to be particularly drawn to scenes depicting a lone female figure engaged in some ordinary, everyday activity, yet imbued with a degree of serenity and even contemplation. Someone helpfully pointed out to me that it must express a longing for peace and solitude at a time when motherhood was claiming most of my time… The subjects I choose can range from the seemingly mundane to the inexplicably fantastical.

What I create from imagination can find its source in some rather unlikely quarters. Some people see recognisable shapes in clouds… and so do I, in virtually anything. Patterns on a floorboard can open up a world to me, as would the swirls of soapy water snaking their way out into the plug hole…More often than not, though, trees will be my most reliable providers of inspiration. I like weaving these natural designs into intricate drawings, usually in black and white, ink or pencil. When I embark on one such drawing, I never know for sure where it’s going to take me. And the destination can be quite a surprising one… There is a surreal, dream-like quality to many of my drawings, hence the title: “Three Ravens and Other Dreams”…

As for painting, as I have no set technique, each piece is a challenge in itself and an opportunity to try something new! In this exhibition I aim to present as varied an assortment of what is meaningful to me, and of the different approaches I take, from copying to creating solely from imagination. I have tried to leave my comfort zone and let myself be led into new territories”.

The Sunflower and the Lion

‘When Rose, a circus girl, has her heart broken by a second clown, she decides to close her heart to broken relationships forever and marry her true self.

She buys a small second-hand photo frame, shaped like a sunflower for her 33rd birthday and chooses to fall in love with her own life, for better or for worse.

That very week, the doorway to adventure swings open and she meets Boris, an extraordinary stranger to fill the frame of the Sunflower. His giant heart will lead her on a journey to knowing the true meaning of romantic love at its most beautiful and tragic – and finally to the realisation of what a profound decision she
had made by committing to her own life at 33 and the gravity of the choices it would ultimately ask of her.’

With a background in theatre, my first visual arts exhibition will be inspired by this story, a one woman show I am writing and performing. I am very much looking forward to it – and might even do a little gig at the opening 🙂 Rose Lawless.

Fourth Annual “SIGNAL OPEN” Exhibition

SUBMISSION DATE: 22ND JULY 2016

€1,000 SIGNAL PRIZE TO “BEST IN SHOW”

Over the last 250 years ‘Open Submission’ exhibitions have become established as an essential element of Arts infrastructure. They act as one of the most accessible routes for artists to have their work seen by the public and are almost invariably amongst the stepping stones in an artist’s career.

When Joshua Reynolds established the Royal Academy (RA) in the 18th century, one of his goals was the establishment of an annual exhibition which would be “open” to all artists for submission. The first such exhibition took place in 1769 to great acclaim and has been run annually ever since.

In Ireland the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) did likewise and over the years others have developed such as E.V.A., Claremorris, Oireachtas, Living Art, Iontas etc. These exhibitions provide an opportunity for artists to come together as a community to show and sell their work and provide the public with an eclectic insight into what’s happening in the arts both locally and nationally.

The Signal Open Exhibition is now in its 4th year and has become an annual event in artists’ calendars. We have been delighted by the response and the quality of work submitted each year and we are very grateful to all of the artists for their support. We look forward to this years’ exhibition which runs from 2nd August –14th August 2016.

“Toytown Bray”

Photography Exhibition by Aoife Hester

Signal Arts Centre is pleased to present this upcoming photography exhibition by local Bray artist Aoife Hester. The exhibition will run from Monday 4th – 17th July 2016.
“Toytown Bray” aims to recreate Bray town as a miniature/model toy-like town through the use of “tilt-shift”
photography. Tilt-shift photography is an effect which involves using selective focus to create miniature-like scenes. The effect is demonstrated in this Bray Beach Toytown video (www.vimeo.com/aoifehester/braybeachtoytown).

Aoife Hester is a Bray-based photographer who specialises in landscapes, time-lapse photography and photo manipulation. Aoife started to experiment with tilt-shift photography in the summer of 2014, taking advantage and making use of the vibrant, busy scenes on the seafront as the Bray Summer Festival was in full swing. Tilt-Shift photography, works very well when used to capture busy scenes with lots of people, colour and movement. The busy, colourful carnival rides, market stalls, marquee tents, cars and people helped to create the photographs which led on to inspire this exhibition. In the summer of 2014, Aoife’s “Bray Beach Toytown” video received a lot of recognition online via social media. As well as being nominated in the Nikon Film Festival, it was also featured in the International Motion Festival in Cyprus.

When not working at her day job as a graphic designer, she likes to get out and shoot as often as she can. Aoife started out with a particular interest in landscape photography and spent a lot of time shooting scenes locally around the Wicklow Mountains. While studying in college, she got a part-time job working in a photo lab where she was introduced to the world of Photoshop. When the shop was quiet, she would spend her time working on photo re-touching and restorations, which she quickly began to develop a keen interest for. As her fascination with Photoshop grew, Aoife started to experiment with photo manipulations – creating quirky, surreal and fun scenes. Inspired by photographer Erik Johansson’s photo manipulation work, she aims to make scenes that are impossibly real, yet seamlessly done causing the viewers to really struggle to see what is fake and what is in fact legitimate.

In July 2015, Aoife won Bronze in the Open category of the Irish Times Amateur Photographer of The Year awards. She was honoured to be involved with such a huge competition again, having also won first place in the Travel category in 2012.
