Aoife Hester

Photographer

.

P1120370

Aoife Hester is no stranger to Bray Arts. She is the expert eye and talent that has been designing our poster and flyers for a number of years. At her presentation of photographs and video work for our November Bray Arts Show she again displayed her prodigious talent in a stunning display of glorious images.

Aoife began off by explaining how she does photography in her spare time. Working in a photographic studio in her first job she became fascinated by the possibilities the dark room allowed to trick around with images. She began to experiment  by producing films where the photograph was exposed on the other side of the film. We were shown the result in a display of highly coloured scenes drawing the eye and forcing the observer to sit up and take notice. Aoife is not afraid to take chances with her work and the results are striking. An eerie atmosphere is created by an observation of a big wheel, taken from an oblique angle, or by the silhouette of two people against a highly coloured sky. Always the viewer is compelled to stay and look as this expert photographer draws us into her vision of the world, one where nature predominates and originality is prized. Photography is fun, Aoife says. She loves cheap plastic cameras just as much as her new and much cherished digital one. She is dedicated to her art and determined to stretch conventional boundaries. One of the most striking pieces I saw was of the night sky from her bedroom window. This was using a technique of rapidly taken multiple photographs that give the impression a video is being made. The effect is startlingly simple yet beautiful, giving the pieces a feeling of peace and oneness with nature that could not otherwise be produced. We saw Aoife’s award winning photographs as well as those she takes on a daily basis, and all were stunning. Her love of Bray and her capacity for following her instincts and taking that shot others would miss are always to the fore. We saw a sunrise on Bray Head and stars on the Sugarloaf. There was a striking single tree on the Sally Gap and another standing alone in the snow. Photographs poured in our direction in a consummate display of ability and artistic sensibility. Congratulations to Aoife for her dedication, determination and ability to produce images and work that stay in the mind for long afterwards.

Second Act

of the evening

Helen Harrison

Poet

.

P1120407

Helen Harrison’s poetry is a celebration of the ordinary. She, as she says herself, loves that mid-air feeling,’ and somehow the line sums up what is good about her verse. We are brought for long moments into the mid-stream of other worlds, of the lives of country people of Monaghan. We meet the poet’ mother, potato peelings blocking sink, no time to think. A farmer tills fields, another cuts wood, engaged in the necessary activities that create the rituals of life from which Helen’s poetry, in the likeness of Patrick Kavanagh’s, is drawn. Just as Helen has freed herself from the realm of her childhood peers, in their neat clipped lives, she releases us to contemplate wonder through the beauty of her lines. In dappled light my speckled thoughts take flight. Helen’s voice clear and lucid, and her poetic vision is profound. Her love of nature is ever present as well as a passionate need to preserve it from human depredations. Wildlife doesn’t mind absence of human-kind, she assures us.  She shows her capacity to mine deep feeling, to empathise with loss, in her poem to a recently passed-away father. You smelt the lane before you saw the edge,- aromas of a time before,- you absorbed the tears of a broken mother, while they put wet clay over your father. Balanced thought combined with strong emotion and perfectly wrought original lines lead us to believe we will hear much more from Helen Harrison in the future.

The Fifteen members of this fun loving group of women were dressed in bright colourful  outfits clearly enjoying every moment as they opened up with “Thunder away my Lord” singing & performing in the Barbershop Style. With voices ranging from deep contralto to high soprano they delivered a full, rich sound as they moved into “My troubles roll away Lord” and “Little dream”. The remarkable bass sound added power to their rendition combined with the classic tight harmony of the barber shop style. Since they are singing a capella, they made use of some of the voices to deliver a rhythmic accompaniment with staccato vocal sounds as the lead singers brought out the song words and melody.  Two numbers were delivered by their own prize-winning barber shop Quartet who sang “I can’t run away if you love me!” in intriguingly close harmony that must be very difficult to maintain. They added a touch of humour with “Don’t sit under the apple tree” as they returned to the full Serendippity choral group to close with “One fine day” to loud acclaim from everyone.

The Final Act of the evening

was

Cafe L’Amore

.

P1120494

The final act was Cafe L’Amore, in the persons of Geraldine Mangan and Joe Domican Beattie. Dressed beautifully in trim black and white evening dress, they charmed their audience with soft vocals blending beautifully with the accompanying backing track of the traditional café orchestra. Their sound equipment was equally elegant and of such good quality that the orchestra might well have been live in the room. They took turns to perform a mixture of Jazz, Bossa Nova, Swing and Pop with such delightful numbers as “I’ve got you under my skin” in the Crooning voice of Joe to Geraldine’s gentle “Sweethearts and the summer wind”. Their easy, professional style delivered with cool confidence eased the evening to a close as the audience applauded the charming performance.

The evening began with a lovely introduction from our Chairperson,

Julie-Rose freshly returned from a week-long working tour in Italy.

.

First Act of the Evening

Grace Downes O’Reilly

.

P1120095

Grace Downes O’Reilly appeared as our “Young Writer”, starting with “Ben” – a poem about her new-born baby.  The beginning of the poem set the tone for the remainder of the piece. We immediately see a tiny little creature cocooned in the love of his mother and his family. The mix of adoration, delight and love is well expressed in the lines: “his head as furry as a peach

With dainty little hands

And dainty little feet” reflecting the innocence of childhood. Grace followed with her own short story entitled: “Private No. Calling”. This cleverly crafted piece effectively led the reader/listener into the mistaken conviction that the husband was having an affair. Juxtaposition of suspicious incidents invited sympathy for his distressed wife. The surprising truth, when it was revealed at the end of the story, had the effect of relieving the ugliness of the potential marital breakdown. Grace skilfully generated feelings of concern for the very serious medical trauma that was the real worry on the husband’s mind and the switch to relief when the medics reported the “All Clear”. We look forward to further writings from Grace in the future.

Second Act of the Evening

Christien Van Bussel

.

P1120104

Christien Van Bussel, potter and wood-turner, presented the art of slip-casting pottery. Originally from the Nederlands, she is now living in the countryside, just outside Aughrim, where she keeps herself fit looking after four stubborn donkeys! Christian gave a brilliant demonstration that made the process look simple and straight-forward as she explained how she uses plaster of Paris to make a mould for a cup. The Plaster moulds have to be made on a wheel in her workshop so she brought the completed moulds in for the demonstration. It was interesting to here how water plays an important role in first soaking the  clay for pouring into the mould but must then be drawn off in a controlled way so that the clay bakes as hard as stone. This is achieved by lining the mould with layers of soda ash and plastic which also help to make it easier to keep the fired clay separated from the mould. Christian demonstrated how the clay needs to harden in the air before firing. The thickness of the vessel wall is controlled by the length of time the clay is allowed to dry out. She then demonstrated how to make the handle in a separate process with its own mould. Paint cannot be used to colour the pottery as it will not survive the great heat of firing so coloured clay is used by mixing in metal oxides to achieve specific tones such as rust for brown and other metals for green, blue and yellow effects. Additional coloured clay decoration is layered or painted inside the mould. This is the artist’s opportunity to go wild with the decoration and a variety of textures. The final glaze is made from flint like a layer of glass on top of the pot. From this demonstration, Christian must be a very welcome visitor to the Schools and workshop sessions that she conducts. More information on Christian’s wonderful work can be seen on www.turningthistle.com

Third Act of the Evening

Dancer

Antje O’Toole

P1120153

Antje O’ Toole – ‘From Far Away’ Dance Solo The dancer waited until the music was right and the n she came out from amongst her audience and made her dance diagonally across the performance area. Ante’s slight, slim body, stretched and twisted as she held herself on her small socked feet with concentration and balance. Making her movements across the floor in one unseen continuous line, she reached forward turned lowered down to a squat, then upwards rising and undulating. Her gaze of intense concentration always directed to the far reaches of this unseen imaginary diagonal line. Orchestral music echoed in the air, her arms moving circularly, then reaching up with arms and fingers extended. The folds of her dancer’s skirt often catching her knees flicked back to glimpse strong white legs, cascading like some of nature’s landscapes made real in front of our eyes. In the centre of the floor Antje uncurled her thick woolly shawl from around her neck, perhaps it was a sign of the spring which is to come? She almost stopped dancing and started to play…yes, I remember twirling my own scarf in a whirling corkscrew from top to bottom winding and winding. I could almost see her quivering, then she leapt up with the music which was by now solely piano. Becoming mesmerised Antje lost her shawl, threw her weight from foot to toot then finished right down to the floor. I could indeed see the unseen, the grassy meadow, the running river, the winds and changes of season. This is why I am regular at Bray Arts, to see fresh individual artists sharing their expressions for just the joy of communication with an interest audience.By Fiona O’ Farrell

Final Act of the Evening

Wyvern Lingo

.

P1120169

We’re here at Bray Arts in the Martello of a dark October Monday evening- about to be enlivened (radiated even) by a trio of highly talented local girls Wyvern Lingo. I understand they have been playing together for about five years now, evolving from rock anthems, on to Aretha Franklin covers and now into……… well, a sound so original that its almost impossible to compare them with any contemporary band and the task of defining their music is not easy either.
While I’m musing over the interesting name (nice one for a pub quiz) they’re kicking off immediately in high vocal harmony, spearheaded by the powerful bluesey voice of Caoimhe Barry who fairly lifts up the percussion sitting aloft her ‘box drum’ (a definite first for yours truely) followed up now by the beautiful soulful voice of Karen Cowley on keyboard and backing all of this is the gentle voice of Saoirse Duane, who with perfect timing produces the most marvellous base runs on her guitar. is she the quiet one ?  Wish I could play like that ! I’m so wrapped around by the diverse sounds and styles that the actual song titles pass me by in a mystery- did they mention them ?  A bit of background to a song can be nice or maybe no need- what with ear-catching opening lyrics such as “All along the Western Front…………”  or “Dark Days, lonely nights”  I’m there…………..or perhaps I’ve been there before.

Working through about six songs in succession, as far as I can gather, the common theme seems to be the standard twenty-something angst and romantic woes, reminiscent of Laura Marling (in her ‘Mumford’ days) On hearing anyone’s music for the first time, this old sixty-something longs for the odd cover, maybe a Joni Mitchell number thrown in somewhere in the middle just to give me an anchor. but hey, that’s a small quibble on what was a completely engaging performance from this talented trio of songsters who gave it their all in the best performing ‘girl band’ I have ever heard live. Epic !  Watch out for ‘Wyvern Lingo’ – they’re going places fast !
